Possible Exposure to Pediculosis

For parents in grades 2-6

A Message to Families About Possible Exposure to Pediculosis (Head Lice)

Dear parents/guardians,

We have confirmed cases of Pediculosis at school.  Your child may have come into contact with a student who has pediculosis (head lice) and due to the re-organization of classes last week, contact has become even more possible. Head lice are common in school-aged children. They are not considered to be a communicable disease and do not cause illness, however they are a nuisance and can spread easily.  Anyone can get them.

The attached information sheet from the Canadian Pediatric Society contains more information about the identification, treatment and prevention of head lice.

We encourage you to check your child’s head. If your child has nits (eggs) and/or live lice, we request that you notify the school and apply treatment as soon as possible. Your child can continue to attend school when they are free of live pediculosis and when treatment has begun.  We are fortunate to have lice checks happening next week, so if you would like to have your child’s head checked, please ‘opt in’ on cash online.

For further information about head lice, please contact York Region Health Connections at 1-800-361-5653.

Sincerely,

Krysten Cameron

Principal

PLEASE NOTE:  GMPS is a West school BUT we have our Curriculum Night on the 12th so you have been given permission to attend the other session.

Bill Crothers Secondary School (BCSS) is a system-wide school with a focus on healthy active living and sport. The school is open for Grade 9 to 12 students. Students and parents from across the region are invited to attend an information evening.  Information will be shared regarding the vision, mission, schedule, programs, the transfer policy, and application process.

Safety Week

This week is Safety Week!  As part of this week, we will be practising our drills – fire, hold and secure, and lockdown.  Although we are hopeful to never need to use these skills, they are important to be practised.  Please speak to your children about how you keep safe at home and around the community.  Do you have a fire escape route from your home?

Have a safe and happy HOT Tuesday!

Feelin’ HOT HOT HOT!

We hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend inspite of, or as a result of record breaking heat!  It is hot here at school and tomorrow is going to be even hotter.  Expected temperatures of over 30 degrees before the humidex will be here tomorrow and into Wednesday.  When it is this hot, we do our best to stay cool using fans and drinking lots of water!  We monitor the temperatures in the classrooms and common areas.  Students will be moved to cooler locations in the building and will have opportunities to be outside to enjoy some breeze as needed.  Please help us by sending your child dressed for heat, adding ice to thier water bottles, sending cold lunches and making sure your child has a hat and is wearing sunscreen.  Fall is ‘offically’ here and we will miss the heat eventually!

It Takes a Village

Parenting is hard work!  German Mills is hosting 5 Parenting Sessions over the next few months and we invite you to come to any of the sessions that interest you.  Please have a look below at the sessions, run by Blue Hills, and if you are interested in attending any of them, please email Oksana Majaski at oksana.majaski@yrdsb.ca   There will be free childcare available upon request.  You do not have to be a parent at GMPS to attend.
