Air Quality Today

Good Morning GMPS Families!

As many of you know, there was a fire at a waste transfer station on Rodick Road.  Markham Fire is working in the area to determine levels of toxicity in the air.  As a precaution, we will keep the students indoors for recess and phys.ed until we hear from Markham Fire.  If you have any questions, please contact us at the school.  At this time the air quality further west from us has been declared to have safe levels, so we anticipate that this won’t be an issue for much longer today.

Calendar of Events

Did you know you can check the School Calendar of Events whenever you need to?  On the main page of our Blog there is a tab for ‘Calendar’ and it has all of our dates listed each month.  We update the calendar each month and will often post updates in the Blog when required.

A few items to note:

Lunch Programs – Pizza, Sub and Milk programs begin THIS WEEK!

PA Day on Monday September 25th – all students who are moved to new classes will begin in the new class on September 26th.  Ms. Cameron will be calling all impacted students this week.

Photo Day – September 27th

Terry Fox Walk – September 28th – we will be kicking off the walk at an assembly in the gym and then heading outside to walk.  More details will be sent home

Character Matters Assembly – September 28th will be our first Character Matters/Touchstone Assembly.  Each month we will host an assembly to acknowledge students who have exemplified a specified character trait and to introduce a new character trait.  If your child is getting a certificate or if your child’s class is performing, you will be invited to attend the assembly.  We recognize that it isn’t always possible to be at the school during the day, but would like to give you the chance if you are able.  A certificate will be sent home with your child.

We Need You!

Families are an important part of our work here at GMPS.  We value and require your interest and support of what we do each day at school.  You can be a part of what is going on here in a number of ways – the most important of which is communicating with your child(ren) about what they are learning and experiencing at school.  Learning is hard work!

In addition to this, you can be involved as often and as much as you are willing and able.  Reading communication from the school is the first step!  Keep in touch with us – it is a two way street.  Not every parent has the time or flexibility to be in the school or at our evening events but if you are looking for ways to be involved that we haven’t offered, please reach out to us.

TONIGHT – we have our first school council meeting of the year.  School Council is comprised of voting members (who must attend every meeting) and non-voting members who can come to as many meetings as they are able.  The purpose of Council is to enrich the learning at school and engage the community.  We are more than Fundraisers!  Council helps inform policy and procedure, writes the Principal Profile, hears updates of our important work and sets up Community Engagement.  We want to have you come out!  Childcare is provided for meetings.  At the top of the Blog homepage is a tab for School Council.  Check there for Executive Council names and contacts, meeting minutes, meeting dates and more!  COME TONIGHT at 7:00 p.m. AND JOIN US!  Last year we had roughly 40 people come out to our meeting…more than in many years previous.  Everyone is welcome!

Bruce Trail runner breaks record –

Congratulations to one of our parents, Adam Burnett, who started down the Bruce Trail from Tobermory to Niagara in September 1st. He ran the trail and broke the previous record by a landslide. Attached is his interview from CBC this morning. Congratulations Adam! We look forward to your help coaching our Maverick runners!
