Boys Basketball Update

On Tuesday, the intermediate boys basketball team travelled to Henderson to compete in the Area basketball tournament.  With 7 teams joining the Mavericks at the tournament, the boys had their work cut for them if they wanted to advance to the  Area Finals.

The boys were stunned in their first game against Yorkhill, losing by double digits. But, it was just what the boys needed to wake them up.  Isaac “Shake n Bake” continued to razzle and dazzle on offence.  Supported by his teammates’  lock down defence, the Mavericks went on to beat Henderson and Rosedale.  This set the stage for an instant classic against the perennial juggernaut that is Luis Honore Frechette.

Frechette’s offence was tearing throughout the Maverick defensive line and the boys found themselves down by 9 points at the half.  And then it happened…. Sometimes referred to as the game changer or the TSN turning point.  A substitution that saw Edward enter the game.  His defensive prowess  limited Frechette’s best player to ZERO points for the entire half.  The energy created from the defense finally sparked the offence. Xander was cleaning up the boards and converting easy buckets , while Tim “Free Throw Monster” was clutch from the line.  In the end, the Mavericks beat Frechette 35-30 and secured a spot in the Area finals next week at Woodland.  They will have a chance for revenge as they take on Willowbrook, who defeated the Mavericks last year in the championship game.  There will be a boys practice today at lunch in the gym. Bring your jerseys for a team photo.  German Mill Basketball 4 LIFE!  GO MAVERICKS!
