Junior Boys Basketball

On Thursday, April 26, the Junior Boys Basketball team competed in the all-day Area West tournament at Thornlea Secondary School. The first game of the tournament was the most exciting one of the day as the Mavericks faced off against the Westminster Wildcats. The boys were still waking up as they found themselves down 4-16 at halftime. A defensive pep talk from coach Lieberman got the boys riled up as they limited the Wildcats to only 2 points in the second half as they mounted what would be a miraculous comeback for the ages. The kids from the other schools starting chanting “Mavericks, Mavericks,” as they witnessed the comeback of the year. With only 4 seconds left in the game the Mavericks tied the score at 18-18 and forced overtime. The support and energy from the crowd helped the boys complete the miracle as they scored the winning basket with only 2 seconds left in overtime. It was truly amazing. The boys were riding too big of a high when they faced off against the strong squad from Frechette shortly after their big win. In other words, Frechette got the win. In their third game, which was a playoff qualifier, they got another shot at Willowbrook, who beat them by only one point in an exhibition game merely a couple weeks ago. The boys played a strong game from start to end and walked off the court with a 28-24 win; eliminating Willowbrook, and advancing to the quarter finals. Unfortunately, in the quarter finals they ran into the reigning champs from Yorkhill who took care of business and ended the Mavericks inspiring run. Both coach Chu and coach Lieberman are proud of the hard work every single Jr. Maverick put into every practice and every game. “It was a successful and very memorable season!” – Coach Lieberman.
