Summer 2019 Reading Programs

Help the German Mills Mavericks win the Sora Summer Reading Contest!

What’s better than reading over the summer holiday? Not much!

In order to foster positive reading habits all year long, York Region District School Board is happy to offer a summer reading contest! Between June 17th and August 15th, students can listen to or read books on-line via OverDrive’s app, SORA, available on the app or at . To log on, the library is “York Region District School Board”, and then users enter “York Region District School Board” as the school when signing in for the first time. When prompted, students will need to enter 0 followed by their student ID number (the number they use to log in to a school computer). The school with the greatest number of books read, adjusted for school population, will win a Samsung Galaxy tablet for their Library Learning Commons! Visit the link below for additional information on how to use the SORA app on your personal device (computer, tablet) or cellular phone. You can even access the SORA app on your Android or Apple mobile device! All you need to do is install the Sora app from your device’s app store.

Tips for Using Sora: Once you have access, simply click the Explore tab to search for and borrow a book. Your book will open so you can start reading or listening right away. You can keep a book for 14 days. You can check out up to 3 books at a time. You can also place holds on books that are checked out. To view more books, simply close the book you are reading and go to your Shelf to see all your books. From there, you can Tap Open Book or Open Audiobook to read or listen to a book. You can also use the Tap Options to renew or return the book, get to your notes and highlights, and more. For more information, please visit:

Other Ways to Keep the Reading Momentum Going: Visit any Public Library! Whether staying local, heading away on vacation, or visiting friends and family up in cottage country, you can go to any public library to borrow books. You can also access computers to read books on-line.

Happy Reading! From,
Mrs. Adams, the German Mills P.S. Teacher-Librarian, and the German Mills P.S. Team

Sharing Student Voice

It was our honour to receive the provincial award for the Skills Ontario Cardboard Boat Races Video Challenge. Looking back, it was not a journey without difficulties. The first Skills Ontario Competition we entered was the Video Challenge last year. Although we did not qualify for the finals, my partner, and I developed stronger team working and communication skills. This year, we were able to work more efficiently under the time constraints. We discussed possible video designs and made compromises to create a finished product that we both liked. Throughout the process, we included attractive frame layouts and brighter filters. By playing to our strengths and letting our passion for film-making shine through, we were able to impress the judges. Overall, this experience has taught me so much. Despite the obstacles we face, continuing to work hard is extremely important. If you ever feel like you are stuck, remember that it is okay to be creative! Lastly, we could not have done this without the support of our teachers, friends, and families. I would like to give a special thank you to Mr. Gulab for his unconditional support and belief in us.
